LOCAL AUTHOR SPINS BERMUDA HISTORY INTO AN ADVENTURE
WRITTEN BY GRANT SPURLING | PUBLISHED IN THE BERMUDA SUN, BERMUDA
It’s about time someone took Bermuda’s exciting history and fashioned it into an adventure tale. R.C. Farrington’s first book, “Spinners: The Lost Treasure of Bermuda” ascribes mystical forces to the legendary Bermuda Triangle, creating an alternate dimension that traps seagoers during ferocious storms. Using accurate Bermudian facts, Farrington chronicles five teenagers’ adventure through both dimensions as they fend off violent treasure thieves, pirates, and even Nazi SS troops. The book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to areas all over Bermuda as they are woven into the fabric of the teenagers’ escape from the numerous villains. Farrington, originally from Louisiana, lived in Bermuda from 1990 to 1996, and now describes himself as a “periodic resident”, moving back and forth between Bermuda and the U.S. as one of the directors and stockholders of Gorham’s. After seeing Johnny Depp in “Finding Neverland”, Farrington was triggered to put his well-developed imagination to use, writing in the evenings and weekends when he was in Bermuda without his family. As he developed the story line, he intensively researched Bermuda’s history, visiting sites he was writing about to ensure accuracy throughout his work. Local support When he had finished, he was able to publish through local Publishing House Print Link, making the whole book a truly Bermudian endeavour. He is even donating several copies of the work to the Reading Clinic, hoping to catch the interest of young males to get them interested in reading for pleasure. Mr. Farrington has been encouraged by the positive response and has plans to continue the saga: “I think it’s going to be at least a trilogy. In my enthusiasm over the first book, I’ve already started a second “Spinners” book. It’s been a lot of fun.” The first installment may not be a literary masterpiece, but it is certainly a fun look at a possible explanation of the Bermuda triangle, and an ideal book to give to a friend as a travel gift or for someone who may have visited the island briefly. And depending on the response from readers, it looks like there may be more on the way: “We’ve got a lot to keep us busy if people like it”, said Mr. Farrington.
